I had to take several breaks from reading Going Clear before I finished it because of how frustrating and horrifying it all was. How did you deal with those feelings as you were researching and writing the book?

Abby, it is sometimes hard to carry those feelings. I have a high degree of empathy, and it's not uncommon for me to get emotional when I'm talking to people who have experienced terrible losses. I don't think you can cut off that emotion when you go to write because it betrays your reader and the reality you are trying to convey. On the other hand, I feel it is a great privilege to hear those stories and tell them to the world.
