Goodreads asked David Loring Nash:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

David Loring Nash It all started with my son. When he was about three and a half, I thought it would be fun to tell him about some of the more notable American Folklore figures. Big John Henry, Wild Bill, Johnny Appleseed, and Paul Bunyan. When we got to Paul, I wanted more depth in his story. As a songwriter, I did what I usually do, I wrote a song. I wrote a song trying to answer the question, "What would it be like if Paul were a real person with a more tragic story, and we just changed his story for our convenience?" I wrote the song "Paul Bunyan's Lament" and played it for about a year. Then, it occurred to me, why does the story have to end with a song? What if there is even more to tell? So late one summer night, I just began writing.
