Recently, a friend and I gave each other a three week deadline to come up with a scary story. Neither of us finished, but it took the pressure off and got us writing what we really wanted to work on.

I recently had my second novel accepted for future publication by Unsolicited Press. All I can share right now, is that it is a story about how we use our time. It was so fun to write and I'm excited to move forward working with UP. I'm also in the early stages of brainstorming a potential series idea. So.... lots of fun things going on. Plus, I'm always songwriting :)

I have a vivid memory from kindergarten. I was riding the bus home by a farm that has since become a Realtor’s office. I looked out the window and saw a figure beneath a shroud in the field by the old barn. The lifted their head and I could have sworn it was a skull looking back. In hindsight, I would guess it was someone using an old photography technique documenting Barnes or farms of Southeastern Minnesota. But to me and for a long time, it was something darker. Something ghostly.

It all started with my son. When he was about three and a half, I thought it would be fun to tell him about some of the more notable American Folklore figures. Big John Henry, Wild Bill, Johnny Appleseed, and Paul Bunyan. When we got to Paul, I wanted more depth in his story. As a songwriter, I did what I usually do, I wrote a song. I wrote a song trying to answer the question, "What would it be like if Paul were a real person with a more tragic story, and we just changed his story for our convenience?" I wrote the song "Paul Bunyan's Lament" and played it for about a year. Then, it occurred to me, why does the story have to end with a song? What if there is even more to tell? So late one summer night, I just began writing.
