Thank you for your work. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read so far. Could you say something about your approach to politics, in the worlds you build but also as an author? (I’m always impressed by your attention to power and hierarchy, but also to moments and modes of resistance, so I’m curious if you feel strongly about how much politics to do, for example, or whether the genre lends itself more to certain kinds)

N.K. Jemisin The genre lends itself to the status quo. That's what makes it the status quo. As for how I consider power in politics, I simply have tried to understand how *my* world works, and I let my understanding influence how my fictional worlds work. Same as any author, I imagine.

I loved the way the narrative viewpoint puzzle of Fifth Season unfolded. It was as engrossing as the actual story, a real triumph of both form and content. But obviously once it was all revealed it couldn’t be reused in Obelisk Gate. Did you have a plan as you were writing Fifth Season for how the narrative viewpoints would work in book 2?
