"Orphan Train" was completely absorbing, I could hardly put it down. How is it you were born in Cambridge, but grew up in Maine? I did a study abroad program in Cambridge, a lovely city. Would you ever choose it as a setting for one of your novels?

Sorry not to have seen this sooner, Lana. I'm so glad you liked Orphan Train. My American parents were living in England; my dad did a PhD in British History at Cambridge, and we moved to Maine when he accepted a job in the history department at the University of Maine. I went back to Cambridge for graduate school. It is such a lovely city! In my novel BIRD IN HAND I have a character from Cambridge. I have dual citizenship and would love to live there for at least a year one of these days. Maybe while there I'll write a novel about it ...

Is this book fiction? Did you know that the woman in the painting had Charcot Marie Tooth a neurological disease? I have it. It affects the feet and hands then the arms and legs. It is the most common inherited neurological disease in the world 1 in 2,500. It is still rare. SO many people go undiagnosed. There are quite a few people in the UK with it . There is a CMTUK facebook page I think.

Throughout the novel, Orphan Train, the theme and idea of "fate" stood out to me as something that played a large role in the decisions that Vivian made. I was wondering what your thoughts are on how Vivian perceived fate and what roles that played throughout the novel? Also, do you feel that the idea of fate led Vivian to both moments of happiness and depression?
