Lydia Hodgins
Lydia Hodgins asked Christina Baker Kline:

Throughout the novel, Orphan Train, the theme and idea of "fate" stood out to me as something that played a large role in the decisions that Vivian made. I was wondering what your thoughts are on how Vivian perceived fate and what roles that played throughout the novel? Also, do you feel that the idea of fate led Vivian to both moments of happiness and depression?

Christina Baker Kline I think when you're buffeted around as a child and have no autonomy, no room to make your own decisions, you begin to feel hopeless. When Vivian finally reconnects with Dutchy, it's the first time she feels something that happens to her is fated and not random. Vivian wrestles with the question of fate throughout the novel.
