Oh, I don't know, Lucinda. The characters in RULES strike me as about as restless and happy as New Yorkers today.

I am hard at work on my new novel which is about three 18 year old boys on their way from Nebraska to NY in 1954. It should crashland at bookstores next summer or fall.

Halfway thru the book, I went back to your bio because I was certain that you had to have been raised in Russia, or at least spent a lot of time there. It made me feel like I could understand a little better how people can live under such tyranny and still love their country and be happy. Have you spent time in Russia, or did you get all that just by studying history books?

I have just returned from a two week holiday in Russia travelling from St Petersburg to Moscow by river. Moscow is a beautiful city and we learned a lot about Russian culture from a perfect English speaking Russian tour guide. It was so wonderful reading A Gentleman in Moscow as I knew all the places mentioned in the book as well as the historical references. Did you spend much time in Moscow before you wrote it?
