Amor Towles:
You apparently received a masters in English from Stanford. I just went to a lecture that linked Steinbeck's experiences at Stanford (again mostly English classes) and various aspects of his fiction. Are there any links between Stanford and your current writing....just curious?

I loved my two years there. I read great books, interacted with fine professors, and had a good job on the side. But I wouldn't say my time there had any more influence on my work than the years before or since.

When Katey is at the newsstand an the man approaches her and calls her "Sister Sally Salamone," what's going on here? In the earlier paragraph she talks about when they were fourteen?
