So this book is about; a school with no teachers and no grades, where you shouldn't walk down the halls alone but you can't make friends, and it's a terribly dangerous place except for the protagonist, who is the most dangerous person in the building. The summary is one huge contradiction - which is a bit of a letdown. Has anyone an arc on this yet to know if it's any good?

Hi! I did read the whole book (and I can't wait for the second one). It may sound confusing in the summary, but the book is amazing!

The summary may seem confusing, but I just finished reading the ARC for this and it wasn't confusing at all to read! It is def an interesting twist on the traditional "hero goes to magic school" concept, and I thought it was a highly enjoyable read. I already am looking forward to rereading this book once it is published and then reading book 2 once it is released.

the first 3 chapters are available, and it states that even though the main character is hugely dangerous, that power comes with a cost, making her vulnerable to the dangers of the school. It seems to be more about alliances than true friendship. I loved the first 3 chapters (through naomi's website) and can't wait to finish the book. I have loved all of her books though, so i dont expect to be in anyway dissapointed.
still another 160 days till release though!!

I've just read the arc and it's an amazing book. Cannot wait for the next one!

It's really excellent all the way to the end.

I just finished the arc and the way I've been describing it is if you are familiar with the podcast "Welcome to Night Vale" and if you attended Hogwarts's adopted cousin that's the vibe. I very much enjoyed it (even if left me literally spinning in circles waving my arms around)

I just finished an ARC, I was a little eh on it the first few chapters but then it got so good! I recommend reading it when it comes out, and I can't wait for the second book!
Aaron
I promise, it works.

I absolutely loved this book. Read it in 3 days.

I know I’m late, but it’s a lot clearer in the book.

Very refreshing take on the « magic school » angle.
Evil magical creatures, non-human and human are out to get magic users and devour them for their mana, the school gives them the necessary knowledge and practice to survive in the world. Only 50% of the students starting survive their graduation, so everybody has to try their best to get into alliances with others to be among the survivors. The protagonist, Galadriel, starts out in likely the worst possible situation, as her « affinity » is to become a supremely dangerous evil sorceress, and while she does not want to go down that path, most others believe she will.

Why are contradictions in a teaser summary a letdown?
Jim
After "Uprooted" (hugely disappointing to me) I will wait for others to read and review before getting it.
