I just finished this. I really thought it was a great exploration of relationships, and how our expectations can distort reality. These aren't the kinds of marriages and relationships I have, or my friends have, but it rings so true, just the same. Or, maybe I just don't know, because my expectations and reality are two different things?

Maybe the gap between your expectations and the reality of Fleishman's character is what makes Toby a figure of ridicule. Brodesser-Akman spoofs us at first into believing that Toby deserves our sympathy and then pulls out the rug with his ugly truths.
