Laurel asked Jennifer R. Hubbard:

What’s a reasonable process for a young author to pursue? What are your thoughts of short stories in magazines?

Jennifer R. Hubbard The two basics are: Read a lot, and write a lot. There are so many paths to take after that--classes and workshops can be a good place to start.

I've always liked short stories for their compactness, for their power. Writing short stories teaches you how to begin a story and develop a plot--there is no room to waste; you have to dive right into it and unfurl the conflict right away.
