Can you read the Jack Reacher series out of order or is this one of those that you can only understand if you’ve read all the previous novels?

I personally like to read them in the order the author published them. But that's just me. I agree though @Nick Brett... the earlier books are much better. As much as I've enjoyed them all they do get a bit cliche. Though I will say that #22 and #23 were excellent. Just about to start #24 - Blue Moon!
