Shawna ~ The Wonderer Shawna Monroe
asked
Amor Towles:
Just finished A Gentleman in Moscow for my book club and absolutely loved it! I was wondering why the Count didn't flee to Paris with Sofia? Is it because he loved his country so much that he didn't want to leave it permanently? Maybe it is because the last time he left his sister died and he didn't get a proper goodbye? Or, did he just want to ride off into the sunset with Anna after seeing the mansion again?

(view spoiler)[Dear Shawna,
You obviously need no help in drawing a conclusion!
But to add to your astute observations: the Count has stated that his days of leaving Russia are behind him, and he has gone to some lengths to make it look like he’s left the country when he hasn’t. While this may seem heartbreaking, I ask you to remember that it is often this way in life. In the Irish potato famine families often sent teenager alone to America; Jews in Germany sent children out of the country in the 1930s; Londoners sent children into the countryside during the bombings. Time and again, the older generation will remain where it has lived its life and seek freedom and safety for their young.

Ah! I am mid-way through Rules of Civility and I'm a big fan. I love dropping into streetview on google maps to imaging the characters in that location. Glad to see I've got A Gentleman in Moscow ahead of me. Are you working on your next novel, can you say what it is?
