In One Word Kill, there are two references to hoverboards - but the book takes place right after the first Back To The Future was released. Were hoverboards a thing kids talked about before BTTF2?

They were, yes!
2000AD ran a long-running story starting in 1981 about Chopper, who rode a hoverboard.
I suspect they got the idea from the Silver Surfer whose strip started in 1966, though Chopper rode a board that was very obviously a more modest technological advance.

I see myself as more of a gardener, than architect, but I need a small outline to know my way around the garden. How do you keep track of it all, without intensive re-reading or notes? How do you do your editing? Do you use the whole first draft as an outline, or do you edit line for line, or anything else? Loved all books set in the Broken Empire and the trilogy aobut Nona.
