Hi Susan! I'm wondering how the story of Lisette's List unfolded. Were all your characters and their relationships clearly in mind before you started writing? Or were there some surprises along the way? Thanks for another wonderful book and for transporting us to the beautiful village of Roussillion!!

A thorough answer to your question is best approached by me directing you to additional sites where I answer. Begin by reading "Inklings of Inspiration" on my website page, http://www.svreeland.com/ll-inklings..... That will tell you how the story unfolded to my consciousness. No, I did not have all of my characters clearly in mind before I started writing, but it is good practice to know as much as possible about the characters before I start. Go to my "On Writing" page, read it reflectively; then scroll down to the topic "Developing Your Characters" and read that. It gives many steps to creating fully developed characters. Yes, there were some surprises during the process of writing the thirteen drafts. (Some writers are able to put out a book with far fewer drafts.) And finally, read the Q&A blog, http://deborahkalbbooks.blogspot.com/..., which shows how I put the pieces together of Lisette's List.
Yes, Roussillon is indeed beautiful. Have you looked at the photos of it on my website? http://www.svreeland.com/ll-roussillo.... Please do.

Girl in Hyacinth Blue is one of my favorite books. Just started Lisette's List. You write with detailed descriptions of time and place that pull a reader in but do not bog you down (I just came a cross a picture in a magazine of Roussillion and it was very much as you describe). Masterfully weaving fact and fiction. I am curious where/how you come up with your story. Is your interest in a place or time sparked first?
