Queenie Nguyen asked Susan Vreeland:

How did you decide on the location for your story?

Susan Vreeland I am assuming you mean the story of Lisette's List. The story came after my introduction to Roussillon, the village in Provence where the story takes place. I was fascinated that all the houses in this perched village were harmonious hues of golden ochre, red or orange ochre, salmon, and coral. The are the result of the ores that were mined around Roussillon. I was thrilled to discover that this first step in making art had its origin in the bedrock of the hills of Roussillon. From there I imagined a humble miner who felt great pride in knowing that he played a role in digging pigment from the earth that contributed to the paintings of France. "From mine to majesty" he said. I built the story from him, adding characters and the time period when the paintings of France were endangered by grasping Nazis.
