That said, I think writers often have mutual admiration societies wherein they're kind of obligated to plug each other's work. I've felt on multiple occasions that he gives praise a bit too freely. It's always worth noting when your tastes run parallel to someone else's, but when it comes to authors I take most reviews with a grain of salt.

Reviews can be so important though! I find that the more I read, the more I come to rely on reviews over the plot synopsis. Any story can be compelling if it's done right. Will say that Booklist, Rocky Mountain News, Kirkus, and ion9 consistently promote strong fiction in my observation. (less)
