Hi Larissa, I'd say read the kinds of books you want to write, and get lots of feedback on your work from trusted sources (writing teachers, freelance editors) before submitting it to agents.

I really paid attention to the way you phrased your questions. I try and use that technique with friends and students and my own children. One of the most pivotal parts of the book was when you asked “Who’s Gabe?” How did you know that wasn’t just a simple mistake but something so significant?
