Babs We're not sure if they tried or not. Her father and brother were very poor and the father was abusive. Sometimes people like that don't want to put a spotlight on themselves so they don't want to get police involved. Also, her father hated her for "killing" her mother, so he may not have cared. And her brother was likely too afraid of their father to do anything.
It's another big hole in this story, though.
Deborah Yaffe I agree this is one of the many plot holes in the book. I suppose the original family might not have reported it. But didn't the kid go to school? Weren't there any neighbors? When it comes to that, how did the original Aimee die and get buried and then magically return without anyone knowing about that, either? It's hard to believe that if a child turned up in a horrible shootout in England -- a crime so outre that it must have been front-page news -- no one would realize, in the course of the research that must have gone on to figure out if she had living relatives who could take her, that a similar child had vanished less than a year earlier.
