Her father and brother were very poor and the father was abusive. Sometimes people like that don't want to put a spotlight on themselves so they don't want to get police involved. Also, her father hated her for "killing" her mother, so he may not have cared. And her brother was likely too afraid of their father to do anything.
It's another big hole in this story, though. (less)
