Sukie reads up on her father's cancer and reads the lines "In chronic leukemia, the cells can mature partly but not completely. These cells may look fairly normal, but they are not". I think she is speaking of her own maturity level.

Maybe it means what you said, that she is not doing the seemingly "normal" thing (going back to Boston, not having a relationship with an an older man) as she (these cells) just looks normal, but she is not? I hope for that... :)
