I believe it is a matter of the child and how sensitive they are rather than age. a very sensitive 14 year old may find some of the descriptions disturbing; however, a more mature 11 year old may understand the complexities of the political situation (my children are very aware of many international issues so they may not be representative of most kids). i would probably wait until around 8ish at the earliest however, simply due to the complexities of the political system under apartheid. my recommendation is to read the book and you know your child best, so make that determination due to your reading and your estimation of your child's maturity and understanding. Harry Potter is more grim in many areas than this book IMHO. (less)
