With the violence towards the dogs in the book and other violence in the book, I just can't see a kid under the age of 12 reading this. I can't imagine even reading parts of it allowed to kids that age.

we homeschool and don't restrict books unless they are of a sexual nature generally (there are some exceptions). i would allow my kids to read this. actually, they would prefer it on audio perhaps. I believe it is a matter of the child and how sensitive they are rather than age. a very sensitive 14 year old may find some of the descriptions disturbing; however, a more mature 11 year old may understand the complexities of the political situation (my children are very aware of many international issues so they may not be representative of most kids). i would probably wait until around 8ish at the earliest however, simply due to the complexities of the political system under apartheid. my recommendation is to read the book and you know your child best, so make that determination due to your reading and your estimation of your child's maturity and understanding. Harry Potter is more grim in many areas than this book IMHO.
