Samuel
Samuel asked James Swallow:

Hi James! Great news. Finally secured a physical copy of GHOST. Another character question. Abur Ramas. A true bad ass m***** f***** who is terrifying, but behind the scary a steel trap mind that can make fools of an entire oil rig full of trained, over confident paramilitary operators for his own viewing pleasure. How did that juxtaposition of false dumb muscle hiding a truly brilliant plotter come about?

James Swallow Great question, Samuel! Ramaas (who incidentally, I visualized as actor Idris Elba) was a reaction to the portrayal of characters of a similar stripe I saw in other novels and movies. I wanted him to have more dimension, to be cunning and duplicitous in the truest sense of being a "pirate"... A smart bully who, despite all his flaws, has a reasoning to his behavior.
