So Benjamin had to be in contact with someone who was also as long living as himself who kept a close watch on the De Clermont family. So Gilbert would be the logical suspect, which the family at the very end of the book just adds that to the list of reasons to keep him under their thumb. He had known habits of consorting with all kinds of creatures but was the biggest bigot on the Congregation to hide his transgressions. He knew quite a few witches through the ages and kept close touch with all the alchemists, Dee, Kelley, and others, whom he introduced to Benjamin.(less)
