The book is so artfully written. I really appreciated the notes in the back discussing the artwork which served as inspiration for the story. My question is this: what is your research process? And, how does the research shape your writing?
Susan Vreeland
I first start by researching the artist and the artworks. Then I study the time period and the place and its history. I often research the friends of the artist as well. If I can, I go to the locale of where the story is set and note the weather, the architecture, the terrain. All of this helps me to feel grounded in the story.

Which books have been your favourites and how do you choose an artist to write about? After reading Artemis I happen to see a movie about her and I was disgusted how their turned her character into erotism when in fact she was raped. Did you see the movie? If so what was your reaction?

Dear Ms. Vreeland, I grew up in San Diego and I remember being handed your book "Girl in Hyacinth Blue", by my teacher in the 8th grade. It was a recommendation that the teacher had picked out just for me and it has stuck with me throughout all these years. It felt like magic. I found part of myself I didn't know I was missing in those pages. Your book had an amazing impact on me. Thank you.
