Kerry asked Susan Vreeland:

I love The Forest Lover and really enjoyed The Passion of Artemisia. I just purchased The Luncheon of the Boating Party and am looking forward to reading it. Thank you for writing these books! And for answering my questions. How do you select your subject matter? What makes you decide that this is the person to research and write about?

Susan Vreeland A decision has to be based on whether the central figure has enough substance and complexity for me to reveal new aspects of the person as the novel progresses. Also, the time and place must provide interest and the capacity within its context to offer some insight into the world or life or at least that time period. I select subject matter on whether it allows me to express something of my own sensibilities.
