It is good for middle grades. Readers will learn about Polish Jews and their captivity in the ghettos. It is not graphically violent like many WWII novels but does take place in war time with battles described. The characters will hold you captive with intrigue and you'll learn along the way.

Library Journal recommends it for grades 5-8. Publisher's Weekly said, "the book is unapologetically grim and violent, like the events it so persuasively depicts, and may not suit readers at the younger end of its stated range. Ages 8–12."
Having it in hand, I'd say it is middle-grade. Kids often read books with protagonists older than them anyway.

My grade 5s (and high flying grade 4s) love her books. They also love Alan Gratz and Marsha Skrypuch who write in the same genre with unapologetic realism.

Currently reading it with my 7th grade classes - we are not done w/ it yet, but the kids are definitely hooked.

My 9.5 year old just finished it. She reads at a 9th grade level and she absolutely loved it. Very interested in this time period.
