Ev asked Susan Wittig Albert:

Every teacher of English that has taught me always advises to "write what you know". Do you believe in the advise or not? And why?

Susan Wittig Albert I don't believe in it, Ev! I tell my writing students: Write what you want to find out, what you want to learn, what you want to explore. Write to discover, rather than to report. If you always "write what you know," how can you ever grow into something new, different, challenging?

Thanks for the question--it's an important one!
