This is the first book of yours that I am going to read (Bittersweet) and I see it is book 23. Do I have to read the other book first or is this a stand alone? And I just saw that you were born in Maywood. I grew up in Broadview, graduated from Proviso East in 1964.

Susan Wittig Albert Barb, Bittersweet is more of a standalone than most of the others. While the series is built in several narrative arcs, I do try to make each book complete in itself. My parents left Maywood when I was 4--long time ago!
