Hi Paula, I am currently reading Love and Ruin, and I cannot get over the authentic feel of this book. I feel that you are writing with complete commitment as if you actually were Martha Gellhorn. How did you research this book? I'm amazed and totally enveloped in this novel. Thank you!

Hello, Ellie. First of all, apologies for not responding sooner. I don't get to the Goodreads site as often as I'd like, but I'm thrilled to hear you connected with the book and with my Marty. Isn't she something? For my research, I began with biography (the Caroline Moorehead is particularly good) and her collected letters. Then I read her work, the novels and stories and war reporting--all fantastic. Then I went to Cuba! ;-)
Thanks again for taking the time to write--and thanks for reading--

No ? just feedback: Loved both books! I loved Circling the Sun a bit more because I had no awareness of Beryl B and her groundbreaking life. I love that for me, you created many conflicted crossroads for her that despite my wanting her to remain independent and as spirited as possible, I found that I was also rooting for her to be conventional "just this once" since it seemed it would be "easier". Best wishes

Thank you, Ms. McLain, for your gorgeous book. I just finished it last night and absolutely loved it. I enjoyed "The Paris Wife" and picked this up based solely on how much I enjoyed that one. I particularly appreciate that in the back you explained the connection between the two. I know it's now December, but I'm wondering if you would disclose who or what your next book will focus on? Thank you!
