I have a vague memory a comment you made several years ago when someone asked about another Vorkosigan book that you had started writing about finding butter bugs in the radiation zone, but that was as far as the idea had gone. Is Flowers the end result of that idea? BTW, I'm about 70% of the way through and enjoying it immensely.

Yes, I presume. I'd written the opening of what you see back in late 2011, early 2012, but it stalled out and other projects took over. It was never intended to be novel length, though I'd thought it was going to be a longer novella than it finally proved. Rather like that description of the length of someone's legs: "long enough to reach the ground." In this case, long enough to reach the end.

As a new fan of yours, I thank you for your wonderful novels! As a new mother, I greatly appreciated your treatment of childbirth in Barrayar - it was refreshingly realistic for the genre, even down to the infant breastfeeding shortly after delivery. This detail lead to some curiosity about uterine replicators, however. Do those who make use of the replicators ever breastfeed? Lactation-inducing drugs, perhaps?

Has it been especially thrilling recently as more and more of the futuristic concepts you've used are becoming closer and closer to reality? Or did you choose those concepts precisely because you felt they were most likely to happen/had the most practical application?
