A Goodreads user asked Scott Hawkins:

I'd love it if you'd write an epic fantasy series. Is it possible? Or is it an impossible dream?

Scott Hawkins Hey Thomas,

Never say never, but I'd kind of be surprised. I don't know if this is universally true, but I don't seem to get to pick what kind of story I'm going to do. For years now, I've been saying "I'm going to write a YA book." I sincerely want want to write something that won't make my mom throw up. I've even tried a couple of times.

Inevitably, five minutes after I sit down to start writing, the next scene opens with somebody walking into the room on fire or whatever.

By that same token, I could probably start out with two desperate knights making their way across the windswept moors of wherever on tired horses, but five minutes later they'd stumble across a magic gate to an evil taco shop headquartered in downtown Atlanta. I just wouldn't be able to help myself.

Noted, though. If anything ever occurs to me I'll try to run with it.

Scott
