Most synopses I've read make a point to state "a group of scientists, all women...", explicitly highlighting gender. Because I didn't find the characters' gender to play a role in their motivations or the overall story, I wonder why this fact is repeatedly emphasized other than because it's a bit anomalous for the genre. Did gender color anyone's reading or interpretation?

It seemed that all of the teams from the expedition were made of only one gender (unless I forgot an exception). I don't think it had much to do with the characters. I guess it was just to be clear about who they were since names were not given.
