I personally found her very unlikeable as a protagonist, wether that was intentional or not it was a bit distracting for me at points. Sure she has dealt with way more in life than the average person, but she came across to me as very whiny and self-centered. It seemed like every other page she was flaunting how she was the prettiest girl in the town, talk about humility!

I don't think she is supposed to be likable. Perhaps sympathetic, but certainly not likable. I would call her an unreliable narrator of sorts and consider her to be a form of character that has become increasingly popular: a psychologically damaged female who has an unreliable/warped character/personality. Ruth Ware usually has these kinds of characters at the center of her suspense novels.

Camille has tons of emotional baggage to overcome, and the fact that she was able to escape it is sort of admirable. Nonetheless, she's damaged and her judgment is not exactly stellar.
Though the party seemed iffy, I could excuse it because she was trying to connect with her half sister. Not that it matters much because Camille was not written to be a role model, but an example of how damaging child abuse can be emotionally and psychologically as well as physically.

I was very disappointed in that part of the book-it didn’t add anything to the story. I still felt bad for Camille in general putting up with her mother’s crap.
Lisa
My thoughts exactly! I really don't think that part even added anything to the story.

I'm with you. I didn't find her likable at all, maybe interesting, but definitely not likable.
