What book that you read in your early days of literature do you most attribute to your success as an author? Also, which of the characters that you write about really reflects who you are? Finally, if you were in this community what assignment do you think you would receive?

As a child: THE YEARLING by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings had a profound effect on me.
I don't think any single fictional character of mine completely reflects me. Many, particularly female characters, have some traits that are mine as well.

I remember first reading the Anastasia series at age ten or eleven and enjoying it immensely Recently I decided to reread the books and I think I have enjoyed it even better, being able to notice the literary allusions. My question is: did you intend the book to have a double intended-audience, the child and the adult? Do you have a picture of the future reader in mind? Does it vary from book to book?

I first read The Giver as a fifth grader (sometime around 2001) and I have always pictured the community as a sort of fifties suburb, so I was kind of surprised when the movie was filled with futuristic technology (although given they had the technology to erase memory and emotion, it makes sense). Did you always see the community as technologically advanced, or was that an evolution of your original vision?
