asked:
I am assuming that this book is a standalone but it mentions dark tower and gun slinger so should I read that series?

Every one of Stephan King novels has references to The Dark Tower. Some are more obvious than others.
IT for example is a creature that escaped from the prim which is the outermost layer of The Dark Tower. Christine is another creature that escaped from the prim and shows up in IT.
Google Stephan King universe and there is a person who has made a map of all Stephan King novels pointing out references going to The Dark Tower.
Edward Lorn an author has videos on YouTube going through Stephan King novels, short stories in connection to The Dark Tower.
Beginning with Carrie.
The more one understands how all the novels are tied into each other the more one can enjoy them.

One of the characters in the first story plays a decent sized role in some of the Dark Tower books, and there are a good amount of themes that cross over from the Dark Tower as well. I just finished this book today, but had read through the Dark Tower books a few years ago. Not too sure if it made a difference as to which one introduced you to that character, but I will say that most of Hearts in Atlantis will deal with its own stories. You are right that King peppers in Dark Tower references through many of his books, but I wouldn't suggest needing to read the Dark Tower first (unless you are reading Insomnia).

Thank you Alan Braswell, I didn't know that. :)
