I just finished this book today, but had read through the Dark Tower books a few years ago. Not too sure if it made a difference as to which one introduced you to that character, but I will say that most of Hearts in Atlantis will deal with its own stories. You are right that King peppers in Dark Tower references through many of his books, but I wouldn't suggest needing to read the Dark Tower first (unless you are reading Insomnia).(less)
