Doris Kinsley asked:

How do you think Sydney could have avoided her husband's lack of follow through regarding a will? How do you think the plot would have evolved if she didn't have to struggle to survive?

Ellen I thought her husband should have had life insurance. Most people do, although maybe the wealthy don't think it's necessary if they have other assets. And I'm not sure she really had to struggle that much since she had the Paris apartment and the rent from it, although, once again, she was used to a very rich lifestyle.
Janet That was the piece that drove me nuts about the book - it just was not realistic that her husband took the ex-wife out of the will (and I think they were only divorced for two years before he married Sydney), but then he failed to add Sydney after sixteen years of marriage? Not buying it!
Cindy Sydney was not supposed to be left out of her husband's will. She would have talked to him about adding her into the will, but he died way before either one of them expected. I think the circumstances made her stronger. The ending was great! Great story!! I love Danielle Steel!!
Najat Bilbissi The story is not bad but the plot was very shallow and doesn't make sense in some areas, like why and how a really famous fashion designer would blow out her career to a man unless she had been forced to do that. and after his death leaving her nothing, I think here where she could bounce like a bouncing ball, between he was lazy to renew his will or he did that on purpose, between she wants to lay in bed and cry him the rest of her life, or she wants him alive to kill him herself. She needs answers, why? maybe she will start questioning her faith and what she believes. Though I agree with the writer that selling the apartment in Paris is sad because of the romantic memories, selling the house that represents her safety and stability would be like an earthquake, it won't be easy, despite that the writer didn't give it the right size. I didn't feel the story and I couldn't get attached to Sydney.
I believe this story would be a really good one if it was deeper with more reality and real emotions, I believe she did have to struggle to survive not only financially but emotionally too this was trauma after all.
Adam Zorzi I had to get over this false premise because in Connecticut, where Sydney lived, a wife gets 1/3 of the estate no matter what the will says. The lawyer would've known that.

I agree that someone as wealthy as the couple were supposed to be would've had trusts or life insurance to prevent Sydney's circumstances.

Sydney could've needed $ for any number of reasons w/o the dead husband & greedy step-daughters. DS should've come up w/a better idea. I wonder sometimes what editors do if they don't spot major flaws like this.
Gina it's just hard to believe she had a blooming career of her own and didn't have any assets or care enough to protect herself financially in the long run
Arlene H. Gran She could have taken an active role in ensuring that it was done, but then there probably would not be a plot evolving.
