I envisioned the heroine as Caucasion, but the hero is mixed race. The next book features a mixed race heroine, and an Asian hero.

I know the the author expressed her feelings on this but I couldn’t help thinking of Stella as Asian or half Asian half white. I think it was her parents who had such high expectations of her (totally stereotyping in my head) and also the fact that she was aware of wuxia and Asian actors. Or maybe I’m getting their POV’s mixed up in my head.

definitely get the feel that Stella is Asian. the author can pretend she's white, but as you read the book from the beginning to end, the character development of Stella is certainly raced based towards Asian.
Susan Baranoff
Had the author not chimed in I would have said the heroine was non-specific, 1st generation Asian of parents who came here as children. I am guessing this idea was partly colored by the fact that I listened to the audio version and her parents were voiced with what seemed like a slight Asian accent and their speech patterns were not as fluid, in the audio version, as a native English speaker's might have been. The hero is mixed, half-Vietnamese / half Caucasian.

I just assumed that Stella was Caucasian because all the characters who weren't Caucasian were had their ethnicity defined. And Michael is described as half Vietnamese and half Swedish.
Brian Layman
She is an Asian friendly (very 'friendly' eventually) Caucasian woman who seems to have some fascination with aspects of several Asian cultures. I don't think the book explicitly states her heritage, but you can infer much from how she handles being introduced to new ideas and concepts.

When I read it, I subconsciously assumed Stella was part Asian at least, until Michael's family never mentioned anything about her being part Asian when they met her.
