1) The world building. In TRC we are introduced to many cultural traditions and places and words that if you read DOF you may not understand fully and that are very important.
2) Quite a few of the characters have made a comeback for this book and it is not only gratifying to see how they have evolved and changed in the years leading to DOF, but also in TRC you get to truly understand them in ways not explained fully in DOF
3) The events that have led to the story of DOF have been primarily influenced by everything that happened in TRC.

Of course, you can still read dance of thieves on its own... It is an amazing story with brand new characters. But if you want to truly understand the essence of the story and what has influenced our characters it is highly recommended to read The Remnant Chronicles. I think it is totally worth it. (less)
