A Goodreads user asked Lois Lowry:

To me, you come across similar to F. Scott Fitzgerald and Alexander Dumas in the sense that your words will outlast time. In your book The Giver, what was the message you wanted the reader to grasp? Also, do you think after rereading your book later in life we will grasp a different message than the previous times read?

Lois Lowry Different people will take different things from the book. The same person will find something different at a different age. THE GIVER raises many questions, not always the same ones...it depends on the reader.
