Even the author recommends reading the books in published order. At a minimum, read the first three in the city (Cincinnati) series. Adam has a crucial role in the first book of the city series and there’s a continuing story arc from the third.

I love this series and highly recommend starting from the first book of the overall series but, at a minimum, at least the first in the city. (less)
