Goodreads asked Maggie Shayne:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Maggie Shayne Ideas just show up. I have no idea where they come from. We were driving home from Binghamton the other day, and I noticed a bunch of dead trees on a thickly forested hillside, just this huge section of bare, skeletal limbs. And I heard this in my head, and whispered it out loud. "There was a place on the mountainside where the trees were all dead. Nothing could grow there. Nothing could live there. No one knew why." Lance (my hubby) looked at me, crooked a brow, and I said, "It's the beginning of a new book. I have no idea what it's about, but that's the opening. So I came home and wrote it down. That's how my ideas generally come to me.
