Books and Brews

I absolutely LOVED the series. I'm now looking for other books to read like it (preferably audiobooks as I walk 10-15km every day to keep fit for my job). I've asked all over Facebook sci-fi groups and heard crickets... there must something fun, clever and infinitely human like this out there?

Dan Have you checked out the old mans war series from john scalzi? Supr fun.
Matthew Wentworth I would check out the "Expeditionary Force" series by Craig Alanson, especially since you're looking for audiobooks. The writing isn't as crisp and clean as in "Bobiverse", but there is a lot of interstellar travel, witty repartee, and it's narrated by R.C. Bray, who is one of the best.

Just wait for the introduction of Skippy...
Becky Try anything from Drew Hayes. The styles are very similar.
Emily I'd echo the John Scalzi recommendations - have loved everything he's written, and Will Wheaton is a good voice actor for the audio books.

You might also check out Ernest Cline's Ready Player One and Armada, and Peter Clines' (yeah, similar names) 14 and The Fold. These last two are very different, but narrated by Ray Porter who is, as you know by now, quite amazing as a voice actor.

And there's one more hint: simply find the voice actors you enjoy listening too and search for anything they narrate and you are likely to find a treasure trove of interesting work.

Good luck, and please share your finds!
Kim I liked the first book best out of the trilogy - it, specifically, reminded me a lot of this trilogy: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... . Specifically the humor/feel. Not similar in story, obviously, but both are sci fi/amusing. Not sure if there's an audiobook version though or how it fares
Will Carlton to echo others picks and add a couple
Ready Player one
Old Mans war series
Forever war (classic)
The Martian
Michael Eisen Try the "Three Body Problem" trilogy. One of the best works of science fiction I've ever read.
Jasen Interestingly, I accidentally started this series based on a recommendation, right after reading "The Stories of Ibys" which actually kind of leads into the ideas in this series. Very strange coincidence. You might check it out.
Eric Read Project Hail Mary. Very similar feel, sometimes described as "competency porn."
Kara The Long Earth series by Terry Pratchett is pretty similar in tone. I really liked it, and the books are long.
Books and Brews Hey folks, please DO NOT recommend Old Man's War to me any more. I read the first book and it was pretty damned average. Not very well written and the characterisation was very poor. Craig Alanson's Expeditionary Force, on the other hand, I have got into. I'd also like to recommend Bobby Adair's 'Freedom' series.
Alex Shrugged If you like the tongue-in-cheek style of the Bobiverse, I suggest...

The Troy Rising series by John Ringo. There are three books in the series: "Live Free or Die," "Citadel," and "The Hot Gate".

I especially loved the following line in book 1...

"Oh, no, no, no, no, nooo! Blondes in heat? Why couldn't it have been mutant cyborgs?"

It is not a sex comedy. It is more like a libertarian/merchant/trader comedy, but the line is pretty funny.

You might also like the Miles Vorkosigan series. I suggest starting with...

"The Warrior's Apprentice," by Lois McMaster Bujold. A young man is denied a military career because of his physical limitations, but he soon finds himself the owner of a freighter, and a pile of debt. He must find cargo to haul to pay off that debt, but the "farming equipment" he is hauling into a war zone is more than it appears. The humor comes from his slight stature. People believe he is too small to be a threat. Big mistake. :-)

"Captain Vorpatril's Alliance" by Lois McMaster Bujold. Ivan Vorpatril is roped into spying on a pretty young woman who has a host of hitmen after her amongst the environmental domes of Komarr. His mission is to delay her, thus helping her avoid one of those hitmen. But things get complicated and the only way out is certain death or make an "alliance" with Ivan Vorpatril who has diplomatic immunity. Comedy ensues.
Laurel I agree that John Scalia is great. Pretty much all of his books have the funny well balanced with the Sci-fi but Old Man's series is my personal favorite.
I love good audio Sci-Fi.
Have you read Andy Wier? The Martian is funny and so is Artemis.

Evan Currie's Odyssey One series is so much fun. Lots of stuff going on, and for a part of the series that can be a stand alone. Read King of Thieves, it's f'ing brilliant.

Although not as light, I have really enjoyed Marko Kloos Frontline Series. It's more Military SF but the narration is good and I got seriously sucked in.

Dennis E Taylor's new book Singularity Trap is also loads of fun.
Marisa You should try Starship Grifters by Robert Kroese, the series is very entertaining to listen to!
Leah Definitely Old Mans War
Pavel Lishin I would recommend anything by John Scalzi; there's a lot of similarity in their writing.

For a standalone novel to try, I'd say go for The Android's Dream. The Old Man's War series is quite good, too.

Robert J. Sawyer might be up your alley as well.
Greg Sheppard Have you considered something good instead?
Kaila These may not have the humor but they might fit the bill!

Wool by Hugh Howey
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
Hogan Ian M Bank's culture series: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
Martha I concur with the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi and The Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson.
A series I really enjoyed last year was The Linesman by S. K. Dunstall
On a slightly different vein, If you go for fantasy, snark and action you might also try the Monster Hunters International series by Larry Correia
and the Undying Mercenaries series by B. V. Larson. Happy listening!
Dillon Grey War of Old men
dan in case you didn't get it.. old man's war.
Addy Columbus day by Craig Alanson! This whole series has been so much fun to listen to!
