I (accidentally) bought this - the 6th book at a book sale, and don't have the previous ones. Do I have to read the first five first or can I start with this one?

Kara For the best effect, the Alex Cross Series is best read in order. It is probably almost as good as stand alone, but the entire series has several character developments, both in the the 'good' and 'bad' characters. They intertwine. If you're a fan of Pattersons and it sounds good, then I would read the beginning. Alex Cross is (I'm assuming) Pattersons biggest, and most fan favorite series. They usually leave you jawdropped, yet it is a series that he's still writing, so you always have the 'comfort' of Alex Cross not dying or get fired etc.
