It is probably almost as good as stand alone, but the entire series has several character developments, both in the the 'good' and 'bad' characters. They intertwine. If you're a fan of Pattersons and it sounds good, then I would read the beginning. Alex Cross is (I'm assuming) Pattersons biggest, and most fan favorite series. They usually leave you jawdropped, yet it is a series that he's still writing, so you always have the 'comfort' of Alex Cross not dying or get fired etc. (less)
