The ego or image of masculinity is being indoctrinated into young boys before the morals of masculine expectations and performances are introduced.

I loved that poem! I took it as, boys are being told what a 'real man' should look like and act like. They're being told that they have to have certain things, look certain ways to accomplish the act of becoming a 'real man.' Then later on, when they find that that's not who they really are and that who they are is so different to what society tells them to be, then they realise too late that a 'real man' isnt about actions, perceptions and looks, it's about how grow with your 'true self'.

I believe it means that boys focus too heavily on masculinity (hypersexuality, dominance, etc). in trying to become "the man". They forget morals, ethics, and standards along the way, which are apart of being "a man".

"The Man" = being famous or popular or the top jock, etc., is not the same as being a decent, understanding, loving, real person (aka, A Man.)
Janet
A man walks softly, when that's the right thing to do, and doesn't necessarily need to carry a stick, or a gun, or use power or force. THE man is out to prove who he is with tools of power. So THE man is in need of power and A man only needs compassion as his main tool.

Boys right from their childhood are taught how a man should be ...powerful, dominating, , superior than a woman and is a privileged gender....But when he grows up and falls for a girl, he realises that these features are not the one which may attract the lady of her dreams....to be 'The Man' ( specific person from someone eyes), he need to acquire more characteristics....being considerate, being loving, being protective, being understanding, being respectful for the opposite gender (not only her dreamgirl)......

I believe it means that boys after being told by society what "The Man" is suppose to be, which is the dominant, the one who controls, the breadwinner, the protector, the drinker, the one who doesn't need to clean, iron or cook etc, will eventually realise that it is all superficial, and that they have choices which sets them apart from being "a man" rather than "the man." And by the time He figures this out he would have missed out on so many opportunities.

The man for the woman is not same as a man.
