A Goodreads user asked:

Is this even close to being as epic as Sarah J. Maas's work like it says in the blurb?

Jackie Comparing authors is really difficult, and I wouldn't say Miller's writing style is anything like Maas'... and I wouldn't want it to be. It's very different. I liked it, though, and I strongly disagree with a previous answer stating that Sal's only characteristic is being genderfluid. In fact, they don't even mention it often...
Gretal I wouldn't really say Sarah J. Maas's work is epic at all. And if you're looking for an "assassin" who doesn't kill people, you'll be disappointed.
Cherish World building is terrible and Sal's only defining characteristic is 'I'm gender fluid'
Rori I dislike author comparisons because they always end up giving wrong expectations to readers.
I personally enjoyed this book more than I enjoyed Throne of Glass. I thought it was well-written, had the right amount of action, and truly curious world-building. Books which keep me on edge are my favourite and this one definitely did the job.
The MC was charming, clever, and easy to sympathise with. They have some sinister motivations and I really like that about them! :) It's not all black-and-white.
Cherie I wouldn’t put these two authors on the same page. I think Maas was mentioned for the sole fact that this book is, to be cut and dry, about a group of people fighting to become one of the Queens left hand, aka assassin. I personally don’t see the hype with Maas’ writing. I mean, it’s ok and passes the time, but she was/is crazy predictable and painstakingly repetitive. This book however, while the writing was just okay, has so much potential, and the backstory that’s building is really something! Much more interesting than a spoiled brat “Assassin” that got caught and sent to a salt mine, who complains to herself that her boobs became lackluster there because she lost so much weight. Aelin from ToG is pathetic, Assassin wise, compared to these characters. Well, she’s really just pathetic in general, lol. So no, I wouldn’t compare the two authors. Give this book a try, if you haven’t already. I’m eager for the sequel!
Alex Lloyd Well, the premises to Throne of Glass and this book are super similar, but their writing styles are super different, and I would say Sarah J. Maas is better at world building and character design. In my opinion, Sal is boring and doesn't have much personality, the romance didn't make much sense, and I found myself bored half the time. But that's just me.
Angie Gaule I would say no. The storyline just wasn't tight enough. It could have been, but it needed better editing.
Kari I didn't think so. Maas's world building is a little more fluid.
