I'm very fortunate in that I'm married to a writer. That makes things easy! But when I'm choosing other people to read material, I try to aim for my friends whose taste I admire and who can speak to the themes of the book.
It is sometimes different friends each time. I often use beta readers as sensitivity readers as well. "Did I accurately and respectfully reflect this aspect of this issue you have faced?" That sort of thing.
The most important thing about beta readers is that you have to feel they respect you. Otherwise, you will bristle at their criticisms and not listen the way you need to and intend to.

I couldn't put your book down - it's the first one I've read of yours and definitely won't be the last. I thought Evelyn had some great wisdom to share and definitely things to think about. Did you outline in advance the character development of her different husbands and the intersections of relationships?
